Their goal; to eliminate the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nea.gov\/\">American National Endowment for the Arts<\/a>&#8216; $165 million budget. For example, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cptonline.org\/about-cleveland-public-theater.php\">Cleveland Public Theatre<\/a> was awarded $10,000 to help kids in a transitional home and treatment center create a play and perform it in social service and community settings. Do we need the arts? What do they achieve? What role might they play in a future planet?\u00a0 Most of us listen to music, watch movies or look at pictures at least once or twice a day, but rarely do we consider the societal impacts of such commonplace things. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Calibri'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Calibri';\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri';\">It only really takes a moment to understand how pivotally art is linked to culture, learning, community or conflict. Poverty,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/AIDS\" target=\"_blank\">AIDS<\/a>, sexuality, all these crucial human elements can be explored through art. It can offer a way to educate, discuss and approach. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Calibri'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Calibri';\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri';\">The very earliest human settlements bear artistic traces of our ancestors. We learn from an early age through song. For whatever reason, this appears to be of great importance. In 2006, Washington based\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.nea.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Endowment for the Arts<\/a>\u00a0released a study called The Arts and Civic Engagement.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Calibri'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Calibri';\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri';\">Based on findings from the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.arts.gov\/research\/Notes\/81.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">2002 Survey of Public Participation in the Arts<\/a>, the study revealed that people who participate in the arts are people who help make communities thrive. It found those who participate in the arts also engage in positive civic and individual activities, such as volunteering, going to sporting events, and outdoor activities at significantly higher rate than non arts participants.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Calibri'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Calibri';\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri';\">\u2018The personal decision to engage with arts events or literature appears, in many cases, to reflect a larger drive toward civic and social involvement,\u2019 reported the follow up 2009 research note.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u00a0<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-733 alignright\" title=\"positive-street-art\" src=\"http:\/\/wormholeriders.org\/youdecide\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/positive-street-art-480x360.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wormholeriders.org\/youdecide\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/positive-street-art-480x360.jpg 480w, https:\/\/wormholeriders.org\/youdecide\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/positive-street-art-256x192.jpg 256w, https:\/\/wormholeriders.org\/youdecide\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/positive-street-art-320x240.jpg 320w, https:\/\/wormholeriders.org\/youdecide\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/positive-street-art.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/p>\n<dl id=\"attachment_733\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 490px;\">\n<dd class=\"wp-caption-dd\">Cleveland Street Art<\/dd>\n<\/dl>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Calibri'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Calibri';\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri';\"><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.meetup.com\/Art-of-Digital-London\/members\/13868197\/\" target=\"_blank\">Andy Kyriakides<\/a> works for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.visitingarts.org.uk\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Visiting Arts,<\/a>\u00a0which works to strengthen international and intercultural understanding through the arts. He explains just how vital this is. \u201cArts contribute in many ways, especially internationally where arts are used by Visiting Arts to strengthen intercultural dialogue between countries where normal methods of diplomacy are limited.\u201d What can the arts do for our ethical or personal perspectives? \u201cArts can give a message in a variety of different forms, whether it is visual art, performing art, literature and the like.\u201d he continues. \u201cIn many respects arts also appeal to the mind in an\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.compassnews.net\/Ng\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=41862:conadev-2010-sna-brings-art-world-to-lagos&amp;catid=54:arts&amp;Itemid=694\" target=\"_blank\">aesthetic<\/a>\u00a0way where a factual summary would fail to do so. For every question there will be more than one answer, and certainly more than one way to deliver that answer.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Calibri'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Calibri';\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri';\"><br \/>\n\u201cWith the rapidly expanding form of digital media, this palette has expanded even more, and if the learning covers more than just one way, it will reach more people who can respond in different ways\u201d.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Calibri'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Calibri';\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri';\">But the National Endowment for the Arts suggests young adults, from 18 to 34, show a declining rate of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.artdaily.org\/index.asp?int_sec=2&amp;int_new=36427\" target=\"_blank\">arts participation<\/a>\u00a0and civic activities.\u00a0Yet we know that arts can extend cultural understanding of differing races, societies or countries.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_743\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-743\" style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-743\" title=\"street-graffiti\" src=\"http:\/\/wormholeriders.org\/youdecide\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/street-graffiti-480x331.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"480\" height=\"331\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wormholeriders.org\/youdecide\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/street-graffiti-480x331.jpg 480w, https:\/\/wormholeriders.org\/youdecide\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/street-graffiti-256x176.jpg 256w, https:\/\/wormholeriders.org\/youdecide\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/street-graffiti-320x220.jpg 320w, https:\/\/wormholeriders.org\/youdecide\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/street-graffiti.jpg 580w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-743\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201cPeople say graffiti is ugly, irresponsible and childish. But that\u2019s only if it\u2019s done properly.\u201d Banksy, an anonymous English graffiti artist.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Calibri'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Calibri';\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri';\">\u201cA lot of art can go past political boundaries and can penetrate cultures in a non intrusive or aggressive way, thus having the power to break down boundaries and strengthen\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bclocalnews.com\/surrey_area\/surreyleader\/lifestyles\/84998142.html\" target=\"_blank\">intercultural understanding<\/a>.\u201d agrees Kyriakides.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Calibri'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Calibri';\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri';\"><br \/>\n\u201cA lot of this is done face to face, but more and more interaction is taking place online, the boundaries between countries are starting to soften and the arts can provide a safe and constructive environment for this to germinate.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Calibri'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Calibri';\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri';\"><br \/>\nIs it too strong to say that arts can alleviate poverty or suffering and create jobs? \u201cPerhaps, at the moment it is. Arts, like any form of interaction, needs to be participated in.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Calibri'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Calibri';\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri';\"><br \/>\n\u201cWhat the arts can do is provide a place for positive action in these areas to grow, this won\u2019t happen without sufficient investment, but once that is in place, it can certainly give rise to a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/education\/2010\/feb\/23\/human-rights-amnesty-competition\" target=\"_blank\">clearer global understanding<\/a>\u00a0of these issues.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Calibri'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Calibri';\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri';\">In Canada, the Arts provide much more than entertainment. They are education, political exploration, social commentary, culture, community and tourism. Every Canadian benefits from the Arts, whether they pay for it from their own pocket or not. The reality is that the Arts are not financially self-sufficient. Art is simply too labour-intensive. Those who practice art tend to have more education than the average Canadian, and make about half as much income. But, even that is not enough to make the Arts financially viable. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Calibri'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Calibri';\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri';\">We need the public (and by that, I mean the government) to help as well. Because the audiences are paying for their tickets and the artists are working for very little, and the gap still needs closing.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_735\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-735\" style=\"width: 175px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-735\" title=\"nathanmedd\" src=\"http:\/\/wormholeriders.org\/youdecide\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/nathanmedd.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"175\" height=\"221\" srcset=\"https:\/\/wormholeriders.org\/youdecide\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/nathanmedd.jpg 175w, https:\/\/wormholeriders.org\/youdecide\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/nathanmedd-152x192.jpg 152w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 175px) 100vw, 175px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-735\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nathan Medd<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Calibri'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Calibri';\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri';\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.electriccompanytheatre.com\/company\/electricians\/24.html\" target=\"_blank\">Nathan Medd<\/a>, Managing Producer of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.electriccompanytheatre.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Electric Company Theater in Vancouver<\/a> believes that theater should be treated in the same way as popular sports teams, \u201c I am a big <a href=\"http:\/\/canucks.nhl.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Canucks<\/a> (ice hockey) fan, and on their website you can practically take a tour of the team&#8217;s gym and showers. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Calibri'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Calibri';\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri';\">The coverage is so detailed. We need to do a better job of letting the public into the creative process, backstage, richer coverage and insight to fuel interest. Does cutting arts funding really create problems for a culture? Consider two scenarios; Ancient <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sparta\" target=\"_blank\">Sparta<\/a> did not encourage the arts in their society. It was considered a waste of time. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ancientgreece.com\/s\/Main_Page\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ancient Greece<\/a> encouraged artistic endeavors. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-size: 13pt; mso-fareast-font-family: 'Calibri'; mso-bidi-font-family: 'Calibri';\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri';\">There are no examples of Ancient Spartan art and most of the world knows little about them.
